Non-Surgical Options Available
Surgery Only When Necessary
Surgery is often the last resort when it comes to knee pain. Dr Mizan will ensure non-surgical and non-invasive techniques are tried first before opting for surgery. If non-surgical options like physiotherapy, analgesia or changes of physical activities do not help your knee pain or limp, Dr Mizan will discuss the pros and cons of having a knee operation.
Dr Mizan will assess your past medical history and knee condition before recommending a personalised treatment plan for you.
Pain Relieving Injections
Hyaluronic acid injections may reduce or relieve inflammation caused by wear and tear of the cartilage and bone in arthritic joints. The injected gel helps to restore lubrication in your knee joints, allowing for smoother and more flexible movements in your knees.
Pain-relieving injections are insurance & Medisave claimable.
Pain Medication
Anti-inflammatories and simple opioids are important pain medications that can reduce inflammation and excruciating pain in your knees. They allow you to go about your daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs and sitting at your desk with significantly less pain and discomfort.
Physiotherapy involves a spectrum of techniques such as stretching, strengthening and manual therapy to improve the performance of your muscles and tendons around bones and joints. They are an important facet of your rehabilitation.
Knee Preservation Techniques
There are multiple structures in your knee that act as shock absorbers and stabilizers. The two menisci in your knee may develop tears as a result of injury and wear. They may be repaired using key-hole techniques to preserve the integrity of your knee.
Cartilage is a soft layer in your knee that allows the bones in your knee to guide over each other smoothly without pain. Wear and tear may cause pain and stiffness. We use several techniques to overcome cartilage wear such as hyaluronic injections, abrasion arthroplasty and microfractures.
Physiotherapy
Not all orthopaedic problems require surgical solutions. Dr Mizan works closely with professional physiotherapists to facilitate a customized rehabilitative program to conservatively manage knee pain.
Physiotherapy is important for patients who have stiffness, tightness or weakness round bones and joints. Physiotherapists are armed with specific skills and specialised equipment to improve the performance of your muscles, tendons and ligaments. This will help in your pain and mobility over time.

FAQs About Knee-related Pains/Injuries
How do I know if my knee pain is serious?
Most simple knee injuries get better with some rest, ice and medication. If your knee pain, stiffness or instability does not get better or worsens despite simple remedies, you are strongly advised to seek professional medical attention. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis in the early stages to prevent knee injuries from getting more serious.
Do I need to have a recent MRI, CT, or X-Ray ready?
Your orthoapaedic surgeon Dr Mizan will obtain a detailed history from you about your knee pain followed by a thorough clinical examination of your knee. Depending on your age, type and severity of the injury, Dr Mizan may organise an X-ray scan, an MRI scan or both if there is a need. If you already have scans done, please bring it along to your appointment with Dr Mizan so that it need not be repeated.
What are some ways to relieve my knee pain while waiting for an appointment?
The most common and effective ways to manage knee pain include Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE). These four methods (RICE) can effectively reduce the pain and swelling in your knee.
When would I need surgery for my knee pain?
Knee replacement surgery is not always the answer, but it is often the best option for most patients with knee arthritis.
I already have a diagnosis and recommended surgery/treatment. Can Dr Mizan give a second opinion?
Dr Mizan is happy to provide a second opinion about your knee condition. This is based on his own assessment of your injury, including examining your knee and analysing your X-rays or MRI scans. It is recommended that Dr Mizan shares his professional opinion and diagnosis before taking note of any previous diagnosis or treatment options given prior to the consultation. This allows for an unbiased opinion of your condition and ensures the best possible care for you.
How do I know if I’m covered by insurance for knee replacement procedures?
After assessing your injury and analysing your X-rays or MRI scans, Dr Mizan will make a diagnosis of your condition and recommend a treatment option. These options will be written down and financial counselling will be provided. You may then speak to your insurance agent either on the phone, via email or through an insurance app to determine if your personal or corporate insurance covers the recommended treatment option.
Dr Mizan will assist you in checking the coverage of your individual or corporate insurance policies for knee replacement or other procedures. This will include the submission of estimate cost for the total hospitalisation bill (facilities fee, surgeon and anaesthetic doctor fee, implant costs) to your insurance company to obtain an LOG (letter of Guarantee) or pre-authorisation letter.
I have more questions, how can I speak to a doctor?
Please either use the appointment form above, call us at +65 6733 4565 (during office hours), or drop us a text or WhatsApp at +65 9766 4565. We will get back to you within 1 business day for a consultation with Dr Mizan and the necessary screening tests to evaluate your condition.
