Understanding Sports Injuries & Trauma

When You Should See An Orthopaedic Surgeon

box-3

If you suffer from a sports injury, Dr Mizan is ready to help you on your road to recovery. Not all sports injuries can heal over. Some need to be nudged in the right direction with medication, a rehab program, injections or even surgery.

In Singapore, people between the age of 5 to 24 years old make up a startling 70% of sports injury cases. Most patients are male (61%) and the rest are female patients (39%). (source)

Here are some of the most common sports injuries that active individuals may experience when engaging in sports or physical activities:

Knee – ACL Tear or Strain

ACL stands for the anterior cruciate ligament and is one of the major stabilization ligaments of the knee. Injury of the ACL often occurs when a person suddenly slows down and tries to change directions. The result is swelling and instability while walking.

Knee – Patellofemoral Syndrome

This usually occurs when one falls onto their knees or runs and jumps a lot; causing swelling of the joint, pain at the front of the knee, and an imbalance of the muscles (thus the kneecap is not properly aligned).

Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow

Though the two are distinct conditions, they share many similarities such as being overuse injuries caused by repetitive motions involving the arm and wrist. They are also characterized by damage to the tendons (that typically serve a stabilizing function) that attach the forearm muscles to the bone at the elbow. In the former, pain is experienced while gripping and lifting; and in the latter, pain is experienced while twisting the forearm or squeezing.

Shoulder Injury

With the shoulder being the most mobile and flexible joint in the body, it is also extra prone to injury. Taxing your shoulder excessively with repeated overhead movements or contact sport may result in dislocation, cartilage tear or a rotator cuff injury; all of which resulting in varying degrees of pain, weakness and immobility.

Delayed diagnosis and treatment of an injury may only prolong its recovery. Early diagnosis and timely treatment will increase your chances of returning to your favourite sport.

Orthopaedic Treatment Is The Start Of A Pain-Free Life

We all experience some form of injury in our pursuit of sporting glory, health and fitness. Appropriate orthopaedic treatment helps you heal, recover, and return to sports sooner rather than later. Some patients undergo surgery due to the severity of their injury. These operations are designed to either repair or replace injured parts and enable patients to return to their sport. Surgery is just a small facet of their treatment. Pre and post-operative physiotherapy and a robust rehab program are just as important on your road to recovery.

Dr Mizan and his team of qualified staff will be with you every step of your journey.

Patients' Commonly Asked Questions

FAQs About Orthopaedic Treatment For Sports Injuries & Trauma

How soon can I get back to my favourite sport after treatment/surgery?

This depends on the nature of your injury and the recommended or previous treatment. Most surgical scars only take two weeks to heal. The soft tissue injuries may take longer depending various factors.

Will I really be pain-free after treatment/surgery?

The pain that you had experienced before surgery would be significantly reduced after surgery. All surgeries are followed by a period of healing and recovery. While the pain may not disappear immediately, the condition of your injury will improve with time.

How would my performance in sports be affected?

Your doctor will ensure that your underlying sports injury has been addressed to facilitate a good recovery following rehabilitation. Your performance in sports will depend on multiple factors such as soft tissue healing, muscle strength, flexibility, and stamina. Rehabilitation and physiotherapy are crucial factors to enable you to reach your true potential.

What are the potential risks and complications of treatment/surgery?

Each treatment modality has its own risks and benefits. Most skin incisions will involve a scar and a slow risk of infection, pain and collateral injury to neighbouring tissue. Joint swelling and stiffness may require several weeks to resolve and improve. Do speak to your surgeon about your specific injury and treatment options.

Do you have any patient stories?

Yes, please visit our patient stories page on our website to read in more detail, including the X-Rays/CT/MRI scans of the affected areas, the approach(es) taken for each special case, the method of surgery, and each patient’s recovery processes.
